Belvaux

A small village in Calestienne, Belvaux is made up of houses built from local stone. There are also typical limestone lawns where rare varieties flower. Belvaux, it makes you think of a beautiful valley, a beautiful valley… that shows you the beauty of the place!

And inside this village, you will find Caracolis. This nickname, which we still use today to designate the inhabitants of Belvaux, finds its origin in snail farming, a leading economic activity in the region in the 19th century. In this regard, you will discover, during one of the marked walks in the region, on one of the banks of the Lesse, a sculpture of the Caracolis created by Stéphane Renard.

Ave-et-Auffe

Originally, these were two very distinct hamlets which were united in 1826.

Ave is originally a direct domain of the Prince-Bishop of Liège which was ceded in 1478 to the Lord of Lavaux-sainte-Anne while Auffe was a possession of the Abbey of Stavelot incorporated into the Lordship of Han. They were united in 1826, but their origins date back to the Merovingian era. These two hamlets contain magnificent works of art. In addition, the Saint-Lambert chapel has remarkable polychrome statues. The building dates from the 18th century. Saint Helena was invoked against fever, and Saint Raymond for the protection of livestock.

The Rochefort Tourisme team offers you different walks in this magnificent little village, for example, the 5km walk: “Les Geais”. To discover without delay!

Lavaux-Sainte-Anne Castle

Lessive

Lessive retains all its charms of yesteryear. In the rue de l’Antenne, you can admire a rather unusual sculpture: a man, with the head of a fish, stands on stilts. This sculpture by a local artist, Vinciane Renard, reminds us of the nickname given to the inhabitants of Lessive: “les Tchabots”. This term of Walloon origin designates small fish with flat heads, black in color, which are frequently found stranded on the ground after a flood.

This sculpture also recalls the folklore of the inhabitants of Lessive. Indeed, during the floods and to graze their herds in the meadows, everyone from Laver had to be able to “go to skasses” (wallon for stilts). The stilts have disappeared to make way for rubber boots but the tradition has been perpetuated through the folk group “Les skassis de Lessive”. They go out during the village festival which is held every year in July.

Between the small hills called “les Tiennes”, you will have the opportunity to see the old antennas of the space telecommunications earth station. This once made it possible to send and receive telephone communications, images and computer data to and from all over the world.

Mont-Gauthier, Frandeux, Briquemont, Laloux

Mont-Gauthier was once a commune bringing together the villages of Briquemont, Frandeux and Laloux. But since 1977, it has been considered a village in the commune of Rochefort.

The small villages, Briquemont, Frandeux and Laloux are located on the slopes of Vachaux, a tributary stream of the Lesse. They have many lodges.

Buissonville, Forzée, Navaugle

Bathed by the Ry de Vachaux, the small village of Buissonville has been an essentially agricultural settlement since living memory. This ancient feudal lordship of the country of Liège is surrounded by nature that is still intact and lush. Its church has been transformed over the centuries. From a small chapel in the 11th century dedicated to Saint-Laurent, it became a parish in 1596 to serve the villages of Buissonville, Navaugle and Forzée. The current church, built in a neo-Gothic style, dates from 1887-1888.

The hamlet of Forzée, which has practically always been linked to the fate of Buissonville, has a modern church dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Visitation. As for the Sainte Willibrod Chapel, it attracts many pilgrims on Pentecost Tuesday.

The small hamlet of Navaugle will not fail to charm you with its numerous brick farms and its enchanted forests.

Eprave

Come to discover this charming little village ! Stroll around the Eprave cave and the resurgence. Admire the panorama from the top of the large rock. To get there, take the stone staircase. During the climb, on your right is the entrance to the Eprave cave. This cave included several rooms and galleries remarkably rich in stalactites and stalagmites. For protection purposes, the cave is now closed to the public.

If you like the countryside, there is no doubt that you will be seduced by the environment of Eprave, where the Lhomme flows at the foot of the village to mix its waters with those of the Lesse à Lessive.

Havrenne

Formerly, the village was part of the commune of Humain and thus belonged to the province of Luxembourg. Havrenne is separated by just a few hundred meters from Rochefort, passing through the woods of Saint-Remy Abbey.

This small village continues to develop on the road from Buissonville to Humain. This section of Rochefort does not lack charm, and most of the brick houses remind us that there was once a brickworks in the village.

Villers-sur-Lesse

In Villers-sur-Lesse, all you have to do is stroll through the village to come across “cwarnayes” (crows). Indeed, this is the nickname given to the inhabitants of Villers-sur-Lesse!

A few hundred meters from the royal farm, towards Jamblinne, you will find the entrance to the RAVeL, a superb cycle-pedestrian trail which is located on the old railway line which at the time linked Jemelle to Houyet. Please note, the RAVeL is currently not accessible through Villers-sur-Lesse following the floods of July 2021.

Several portions of the RAVeL adjoin the Lesse, offering numerous places for a picnic in the great outdoors !
